The Bible for Radicals

The Question the Bible puts to us: how radical can you be?  Can you be as radical as God?
And our questions to the Bible are based on its own claims of radicality, so we must be continually checking it against the radical experience of G_d.  That is where we will really test the Bible like a hammer and fire test the metal--in bringing it to the most radical places--to the desert, the wilderness, the sea; to the farm and the universe, to our dream bodies, and to the battlegrounds, and concentration camps and the deathbed, and yes the marriage altar and the bridal chamber, to the cancer ward and the gallows.  Can we take it there to try it and see if it holds up?  Because if it does, the story it tells will be true.  We will know it and it will know us.

About Me

My photo
Petaluma, California, United States
I am a priest in the Episcopal Church, and have been (among other things) an organic farmer and gardener, and a Zen monk. I have a lifelong interest in social and spiritual renewal on the basis of contemplative discipline, creative nonviolence, and ecological practice. In recent years my work has focused intensely on the responsibility of pastoral ministry in the humanistic, evangelical, and catholic branch of Christianity known as Anglicanism. I'm married with a daughter, and have three brothers and two parents.
